Tax Assistance Programs

Sarasota County Public Libraries serve as the host venue for tax assistance provided by outside community organizations. Library staff do not make tax assistance appointments. Tax assistance hours and availability vary by location.

Several libraries are expecting to receive copies of the 1040 form and instruction booklet. Please click here to see the current availability of tax forms at each library. All tax forms, instruction booklets and the tax tablesare also available for free here on the IRS's website. Each library offers free black-and-white printing, up to 30 pages per person per day.

Note that holidays or inclement weather may affect days/times reflected below.  Please call the library at 941-961-1110 if you have any questions.

  • Bring all necessary tax documents with you. If you do not have all of your documents, you will have to return another day and get in line again. Please click here to view AARP's list of required documents.
  • All taxpayers listed on the tax return must be present, not including their dependents. AARP cannot accept the presence of less than all taxpayers, unless a legal power of attorney is presented.
  • AARP Tax Aide is located on the second floor of the library. Please follow the flags.
  • Enter the glass-enclosed room and present yourself to the Client Facilitator (greeter) at the front desk.
  • You will be asked to identify yourself with your driver's license or another valid picture ID and a document showing the Social Security numbers of all persons on your tax return, including your dependents.
  • The Client Facilitator will provide you with IRS form 13614-C, Intake/Interview & Quality Review Sheet and an appointment number indicating your place in the queue. You will be asked to fill out the form while at the waiting area outside the glass-enclosed rooms, until called for an interview. Please prepare all tax documents before the interview to speed up the process.
  • If you are able to fill out and print form 13614-C before arriving at the library, you will help make the process more efficient. Thank you!
  • Please read IRS form 15080 - Return Information to VITA/TCE Tax Preparation Sites attached to form 13614-C. You signed consent will speed up the preparation of your tax return in future years by pre-filling your personal information and the forms used in the current year's return in future years tax returns.
  • You will be called for an interview with an AARP volunteer to go over your completed form 13614-C. The purpose of this interview is to make sure you have all the documents necessary to complete your tax return before meeting with a volunteer tax preparation Counselor.
  • The assigned Counselor will prepare your tax return in your presence. Upon completion of the return, a Quality Reviewer will be assigned to your tax return.
  • The Quality Reviewer will go over the completed tax return in your presence.
  • You will be asked to sign IRS form 8879 - IRS e-file Signature Authorization authorizing Tax-Aide to e-file your return on your behalf. The Quality Reviewer will then hand you an envelope containing a copy of your tax return and all your supporting documents. We will not keep any documents belonging to you.
