Yes, even if the library isn't currently open, you can return items using the exterior book drops.

At most Sarasota County Libraries the exterior book drop is located near the building entrance, such as the image shown here. For a list of library locations, please click here.

However, in the event of a natural disaster such as a hurricane, all exterior book drops will be unavailable while the libraries are closed. Due dates and pick up dates will be adjusted during this time.

  1. Twice I’ve driven to north port library on a Sunday only to find the auto drop box not working. Now my dvd return will be late and I have to drive there again tomorrow! Why can’t we use the non auto box on sidewalk? Sign says not to use it.

Fruitville Renovation

Renovations and expansion building works will be happening at Fruitville Library, which will require Fruitville Library to temporarily close on Dec. 18. The reimagined library is scheduled to reopen in July 2026.
